Ralph M. Hower papers, 1870-1970.

The collection consists of teaching, research, administrative and consulting records of Ralph M. Hower. Administrative records include records of the Harvard Business School Administrative Practices Teaching Group, 1946-1948, which contains Hower's views on the efficacy of the case method and general teaching strategies; records from the Committee on Methods of Instruction, 1967; and records of the Faculty Library Policy Committee. Research material pertains to the study of business history and includes correspondence with Norman Gras regarding the Business Historical Society; research for The History of an Advertising Agency: N.W. Ayer & Son at Work, 1869-1939, which contains original records from the Ayer firm, transcriptions of records, and research and writing notes; and correspondence related to research and publication of company histories and books, including History of an Advertising Agency, History of Macy's of New York, and The Administrator. Teaching records include materials for Administrative Practices; Marketing; and Human Behavior in Organizations. It also includes material relating to management seminars taught at the Management Development Institute (IMEDE) in Switzerland, Advanced Management Programs in Great Britain, and the establishment of a research and development program at Zyma Corporation in Switzerland, the establishment of branch offices for Arthur D. Little, and the establishment of the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa (IESE) in Barcelona, Spain.

Norman S.B. Gras earned his doctorate at Harvard University in 1909 studying under Edwin F. Gay. In 1927 he joined the Harvard Business School faculty as the first Isidor Straus Professor in Business History. He organized the Business History Foundation and served as president from 1949-1956.
